Special Community Projects
The Lake Charles District Office participates in a few Specialty Courts by providing officers to assist in the following parishes:
- Calcasieu Parish (14th JDC) — Drug Court and Mental Health Court
- Jefferson David Parish (31st JDC) — Veterans Court
Our district office has spear-headed, organized, and participated in the following projects:
OPEN DOOR PROGRAM:
This program was created to provide assistance to women in need, such as life skills, parenting skills, and coping skills. This program was 3 years in the planning stage. The committee met during this period in the Lake Charles District Office.
The Lake Charles District works with the local Out-4-Life committee in an effort to establish local housing and employement opportunities for offenders returning to the community from DOC Custody.
THE PATRIOT DOG PROGRAM:
This Program has been developed to treat returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who are suffering with Post-Traumatic Stress due to active combat participation. The program also reaches out to at-risk children and patients in local hospitals. The goal of the program is to train dogs (mostly those in shelters) to provide companionship to those who are feeling alienated from the world. The Patriot Dog Program has significant support in southwest Louisiana, and is producing positive results.
